English Advanced Courses visit the International Literature Festival Berlin
Once a year Berliners get the chance to meet authors from all over the world at the ILB – Internationales Literaturfestival Berlin. And as always, the Advanced English Courses from Saint Francis Catholic School were part of this inspiring event.
Year 12 students attended Manjeet Mann’s reading of her verse novel The Crossing. It is set in Dover, England, where the Channel is narrow enough for swimmers to cross it for athletic reasons – and refugees on small boats to attempt the same, risking their lives in hope for a better future.
Year 13 listened to Sabaa Tahir read excerpts from her National Book Award-winning novel All My Rage about Pakistani-American teenagers growing up in a small community in the Californian Mojave Desert. The author subsequently engaged in a lively conversation with the host and her young audience about the process and business of writing novels and her sources of inspiration.
What did we take home? Lots of ideas, including the advice “Go out into the world and do well. But above all, go out into the world and do good.”
