What's up, everyone? My class 11X recently went on a tour of the African quarter, guided by Justice and organized by DESTA. I can recommend the organization a lot to you. We explored the neighborhood’s deep connections to Germany’s colonial past and learned about its impact today.
Many streets in the area are named after former African colonies, a reminder of Germany’s colonial history. Justice explained how these names reflect a past of oppression. We also learned that playgrounds once had tipis and tents where white children played as Black people, showing how colonial ideas influenced everyday life.
We discussed Africa’s real size and diversity, challenging common misconceptions. The tour was eye-opening, helping us understand how history shapes the present and why it’s important to address colonial legacies. It was a really cool day with many interesting things to learn about the past of African colonisation and its ongoing legacy today.
